EDTalks: Baby Brains + Unschooling Kids

EDTalks is a lively new series that engages young professionals on public education issues in Minneapolis. Each program features two compelling 20-minute presentations followed by conversation and networking.

Karen Cadigan: Baby Brains – The Science and Policy of Early Learning
Dr. Karen Cadigan is co-creator of Wonder Years: The Science of Early Development, a National Science Foundation-funded collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota. As Director of the Office of Early Learning for the Minnesota Department of Education, she aligns work across state agencies for young children and their families and manages Minnesota’s $45 million Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant. Karen is a former researcher and policy educator at the University of Minnesota and also serves with Governor Dayton’s Early Learning and Interagency Coordinating Councils, the Healthy Minnesota Partnership, and the University-based Child and Family Policy Consortium.
Kerry Muse: Giving Control to Kids – The Power of Unschooling
Using technology and student-ownership to personalize learning, Kerry Muse helped propel KIPP Bridge Charter School in Oakland to become one of California’s highest performing, high-poverty urban middle schools. Kerry is Chief Learning Officer and Head of School at , a public charter school that opens in Minneapolis next August. He spent 10 years as a math, special education and visual arts teacher in Texas and California and has also taught video game design at the Galileo Summer Quest science camp in Silicon Valley.
